Stocks??

January 18th, 2008 at 09:53 pm

It is so hard to see the gains plus the hard earned money in my 401 drop away. I am feeling it was all for nothing. Thank heaven I have money in other things not connected to the stock market. But I was putting so much of my check in my 401 in anticipation of retiring. Sad, so sad. I'm hanging in there hoping for a correction sometime this year or next with a new administration in office.

As BA has stated over in his blog post at Don't Worry, Be Happy, you have a paper loss but you still own the shares, yes? And hopefully you'll be seeing that correction quickly. But for now, just think, your favorites are ON SALE!!

I don't know how near retirement you are, but unless you are just a few years from that date there is no reason to be concerned about the downturn in your 401k current value. In fact, if you are still contributing the lower share prices are to your benefit. The only time it matters that share prices are dropping is when you are selling them...so don't panic and sell now to "stop them dropping further" (a mistake some of my friends made after the drops caused by 9/11/01.) Now's a good time to be paying attention to the number of shares in your account instead of the dollar value. When the market goes up again (and it will, it always has before) you'll likely see a big jump over the previous highest value before the recent losses.

I know it looks bad, but unless you're planning to sell your funds soon, please believe me that it will be fine. Smile
